International Mining Features TONLY: The Inventor and Leader of Wide-Body Mining Trucks

Recently, leading mining industry publication International Mining featured TONLY in a dedicated report, providing an in-depth analysis of how the company, as the inventor and global leader of wide-body mining trucks, has built its market-leading position through 21 years of industry expertise, continuous innovation, and advanced core technologies. The report highlights TONLY’s role in driving the global mining transportation sector toward a greener, smarter, and higher-quality future.

Industry Leadership: The Inventor and Pioneer of Wide-Body Mining Trucks

TONLY is recognized as the inventor of the wide-body mining truck. In 2004, the company developed the 30-tonne-class 6×4 TL3400, the industry's first wide-body mining truck.

The TL3400 was equipped with a high-horsepower engine that delivered superior torque output, enabling it to handle demanding mining conditions such as fully loaded uphill hauling. The term “wide-body” originated from its breakthrough design, which expanded the dump body width beyond the conventional 2.3-meter limit of on-road dump trucks to more than 3 meters. This innovation significantly increased payload capacity while improving vehicle stability on unpaved mine haul roads.

Featuring a flexible wide-body frame and suspension design, the vehicle effectively absorbed operational impacts and adapted to challenging mining environments, ushering in a new era of mining transportation.

Today, despite increasing competition from numerous manufacturers, TONLY continues to maintain a leading position in the global wide-body mining truck market in both annual sales and installed fleet size.

Customized Solutions: Covering Every Application and the Entire Equipment Lifecycle

Built around the core values of customization, reliability, and energy efficiency, TONLY has developed a comprehensive wide-body mining truck portfolio covering diesel, hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered models, with payload capacities ranging from 30 to 110 tonnes. These products are widely deployed in open-pit coal mines, metal mines, aggregates operations, and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Every TONLY solution is tailored to specific mining conditions, taking into account factors such as environmental conditions, production requirements, haul road characteristics (including haul distance and gradients), material types, and fleet operating status.

TONLY also provides comprehensive lifecycle support services, including remanufacturing of used equipment, operator training, routine maintenance, spare parts supply and inventory management, as well as maintenance team establishment and management. These integrated service capabilities help maximize equipment availability and have become one of the company's key competitive advantages in international markets.

Today, the vast majority of TONLY wide-body trucks are connected to the company’s self-developed TIMS 4.0 (Mining Intelligent Management System) cloud-based digital monitoring platform. Rather than supplying standalone equipment, TONLY delivers integrated “Equipment + System” solutions that enhance operational efficiency and fleet management.

Global Expansion: Driving Mining Transformation Through Technological Innovation

In the field of mining autonomy, China operates more autonomous wide-body mining trucks than all other regions of the world combined. By 2025, the number of autonomous wide-body trucks operating in China exceeded 3,000 units, compared with approximately 1,600 units across the rest of the world.

Among them, around 1,500 autonomous wide-body trucks are manufactured by TONLY, representing nearly half of the Chinese market.

In terms of green technology development, TONLY began its new-energy transition as early as 2015, when it introduced the industry's first battery-electric wide-body mining truck powered by lithium titanate batteries. Since then, the company has established a comprehensive portfolio of battery-electric, battery-swapping, and hybrid-powered intelligent mining transportation solutions.

Supported by its global market strategy and continuous investment in new-energy technologies, TONLY has steadily expanded its international footprint. The company has also established close partnerships with global mining leaders such as Rio Tinto to jointly develop green transportation solutions tailored to overseas mining operations.

These collaborations help international mining companies achieve their carbon reduction targets while demonstrating the growing global influence of Chinese mining equipment innovation. Through technological advancement and sustainable development, TONLY continues to contribute to the transformation and long-term sustainability of the global mining industry.
